What these Statutes determine

The Statutes of the World Karate Federation are the framework within which every other regulation of the federation takes its meaning. Article 1 determines the constitution of the federation and its objectives, Article 2 its structure, and Articles 3 and 4 its financial resources and assets.

A substantial part of the Statutes is devoted to membership: Article 5 determines the affiliation and disaffiliation of national federations, Article 6 the rights and duties of member countries, and Articles 7 and 8 the status of natural persons and their rights and duties — an important distinction, because it shows that athletes and coaches owe duties to the federation directly, and not only through their national federation.

Article 9 deals with admission and undertakings, and Article 10 with the conditions of eligibility for participation in competitions.

The relationship of this document to the ethics and disciplinary regulations

The Statutes establish the organs and their competences but do not themselves contain the procedure; that is determined by the federation's Ethics and Disciplinary Regulations, a separate instrument available in the Spoleg library. In practice the two documents are always read together: the Statutes answer which organ has competence, and the disciplinary regulations answer how that organ conducts proceedings.

Who this document matters to

The Iranian Karate Federation is bound by the framework of this document in drawing up its internal regulations and in its affiliation to the federation. For athletes and coaches, Article 10 has direct practical importance because it determines the conditions of participation in international competitions; and for sports lawyers, the Statutes are the basis for establishing the competence of any organ that has taken a decision concerning a client.
