In force2 December 2020 — adopted by the IHF Council
StructureChapter XVII of the International Handball Federation's body of regulations
StatusCurrent edition — administered by the IHF Head Office

What these regulations govern

The regulations of the International Handball Federation (IHF) form a set of numbered chapters headed by the Statutes, each chapter governing one area. This document is Chapter XVII of that set.

The document has two parts: advertising on sports clothing and advertising in the hall. The first part governs, on a binding basis within the International Federation's jurisdiction, the appearance of the clothing of players, team officials, referees and IHF representatives.

Key points

  1. IHF priority and invalidity of conflicting contractsThe International Federation holds the advertising rights at World Championships of all age categories, beach handball and club and national World Cups, and priority lies with advertising for the IHF's general sponsor. Advertising contracts of member federations and World Cup participants that prejudice the IHF's right of priority are invalid.
  2. Prohibition of material benefit to the wearerAdvertising on sports clothing must not be accompanied by material benefit to the person wearing it.
  3. Restrictions on contentThe use of company and product names, trade marks and classes of goods is permitted provided it is not contrary to public decency; advertising of a political, religious, racist or ideological nature is prohibited.
  4. Compliance with national lawNational advertising prohibitions — such as bans on advertising tobacco, alcohol and narcotics — must be observed.
  5. Prohibition of fluorescent coloursThe use of fluorescent colours is prohibited, and this prohibition applies not only to the advertising but also to the material of the clothing and tracksuits themselves.
  6. Freedom of national federationsNational federations are under no restriction as to the placement of advertising on sports clothing; the financial participation of teams and clubs is subject to the financial regulations.

Who this document matters to

For clubs and federations concluding sponsorship contracts, the rule invalidating contracts that conflict with the IHF's right of priority is the most important point: an undertaking given to a sponsor may not be enforceable at International Federation events. The financial regulations also allocate the outer sleeve of the shirt exclusively to IHF advertising.
