What is the World Anti-Doping Code?
The World Anti-Doping Code is the foundational instrument of the global anti-doping system: it defines anti-doping rule violations, sets the burden and standard of proof, enumerates sanctions and the conditions for their reduction or aggravation, and organises the procedures for results management, hearings and appeals. All International Federations, National Olympic Committees and National Anti-Doping Organisations that have accepted it are required to bring their own rules into conformity with it; the International Standards — from the Prohibited List to sample collection, therapeutic use exemptions, results management, education and privacy — determine the technical detail of its implementation.
About the 2015 Persian translation
Features of this edition
- Status of this textThis document is an unofficial translation. The official texts of the Code are published by the World Anti-Doping Agency in English and French, and in the event of any conflict or discrepancy, the English text is the governing text.
- Basis of the translationThe translation is based on the edition adopted by the World Anti-Doping Agency Foundation Board on 15 November 2013 in Johannesburg, which became applicable on 1 January 2015.
- Practical valueAccess to a Persian text assists athletes, team physicians and sports lawyers, but when citing the Code in a case — whether before federation bodies or before the Court of Arbitration for Sport — the English text must be cited.
Who this document matters to
Every doping case, in any sport, ultimately returns to this text; the anti-doping rules of the international federations are nothing other than the implementation of this Code within that sport. Three points are decisive in a defence: liability in doping is strict, and proof of intent or fault is not required; the burden and standard of proof are defined within the Code itself and are not identical to criminal standards; and each case is governed by the version that was in force at the time the violation occurred, unless a later version is more favourable to the accused.
